UK to produce new electric Nissan

In an exciting coup set to safeguard hundreds of jobs at the UK’s largest car plant in Sunderland, Nissan name their North East site as the planned producer of the pioneering new Nissan Leaf.

The new hatchback model will begin to roll off the production line in 2013 and is touted as the world’s first affordable, mass-produced, emission-free car. It runs solely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries which will also be produced for Nissan in Sunderland, creating an additional 350 jobs for the local area.

Government backing

The Japanese car giant’s decision to produce their new green machine in Sunderland is thanks in no small part to investment by the UK government to the tune of £20.7m.

The government’s commitment to electric car infrastructure has not gone unnoticed either. With thousands of additional charging points pledged for the capital and a major new research project about to get underway at the University of Aberdeen, the UK really does seem poised to begin its evolution into Lord Mandelson’s vision of ‘a world-leader in ultra-low carbon vehicles.’
